A Heartfelt Week in Thessaloniki: Insights and Connections
Back in June, I had the incredible privilege of joining esteemed leaders in recovery and addiction prevention at a global event in Thessaloniki, Greece, where I was reminded of the profound impact that shared understanding and community have on our collective healing journeys.
It was humbling to share the stage with renowned experts like Ms. Vivienne Evans, Prof. David Best, and Mrs. Mulka Nisic. You can check out their AWESOME presentations here.
What struck me most was how, despite our diverse backgrounds and individual stories, our presentations beautifully came together around the core themes of belonging, connection, and community. As I mentioned during my talk:
"Belonging and connection are protective factors that underpin every stage of addressing addiction."
The event was bustling with 800 attendees from 123 different countries, making it a melting pot of engaging conversations, enlightening workshops, and invaluable networking opportunities. The energy was electric—everyone brought so much passion and heart! I found myself completely drawn into the myriad of stories from around the world, each filled with unique insights and invaluable wisdom.
I also had the chance to dive deeper into discussions with David and Mulka during an interview for the Drug-Free America Foundation's podcast, which you can check out here.
Outside the conference, I took some time to soak in the rich history and vibrant culture of Greece. Using mindfulness techniques I learned from my coach, Jen Schneeman, I fully embraced and appreciated every moment. From exploring ancient fortresses that have withstood the tests of time to enjoying meals by the Aegean Sea with dear friends (Carlton Hall and his wife, Amy Ronshausen, along with Mulka Nisic and Mousa Daoud), every experience was steeped in fun, laughter, and meaningful connection.
Visiting a centuries-old fortress, Monument Heptapyrgion, and dining by the sea were definitely highlights. These moments weren’t just breaks from the busy conference schedule; they were opportunities to forge deeper bonds with new friends and colleagues in some of the most beautiful settings imaginable!
This trip was so much more than a professional event; it was a powerful reminder of the universal nature of our struggles and the strength found in shared stories and experiences. I left Thessaloniki with a fuller heart and a renewed commitment to my work and the incredible community I’m so lucky to be a part of.
Reflecting on my time in Greece, I’m filled with gratitude for the connections made and the stories shared. It was an enriching experience that I’ll carry with me always, reminding me of the beauty of human connection and our collective resilience!
