Podcast: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Prevention's Professional Standards
Although we have a number of buzzwords focused on diversity and cultural inclusion, this topic should have always been at the forefront of our minds. In fact, when you truly examine our code of ethics and the Strategic Prevention Framework, is it obvious that diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in our professional standards?
THIS EPISODE PLACES A SPOTLIGHT ON THE WHY AND HOW WE CAN BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT IMPROVING HEALTH EQUITY IN OUR PREVENTION PRACTICE.
Nicole was born in Inglewood, CA in the early 80s during the decade in America, known for the "crack epidemic". This was her first experience with social injustice, racial inequality, and the roots of trauma that plague many people of color in the US. Her story of resilience is also a story of opportunity that came when her Grandmother relocated the family out of such a hostile environment.
Nicole found herself studying sociology and public health and was drawn to understanding the root causes of health disparities. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Cornell University and her Master of Public Health from The George Washington University School of Public Health.
Throughout her career in public health, she has focused her work on understanding health disparities and social inequality. Her vision is for RIZE to be a change agent in creating shifts in the cultural norms that perpetuate racial disparities in the United States.
