Celebrating Sobriety: Reflections from My Sober-Versary

Last month marked a significant milestone in my life... My sober-versary! This occasion gave me a moment to reflect on my journey of self-discovery and empowerment that reshaped how I see the world and myself. Here's what I've learned on the other side of substance misuse…

Transforming Through Words

My journey taught me the incredible power of words. My inner dialogue used to be filled with obvious negative words like 'failure' and 'trapped' during my darker moments. However, I also noticed more subliminal negative words after choosing sobriety like 'addiction' and 'recovery' that can also degrade us more than we realize. Embracing sobriety led me to change my narrative to one of hope and strength instead of harping on shame in sneaky ways. This simple shift transformed my mindset, guiding me toward a more positive self-image and a brighter outlook on life.

Choosing My Identity

Sobriety has been about more than just abstaining from substances; it's been about choosing who I want to be. It offered me a blank canvas to redefine my identity, not as static, but as something I consciously create every day. Choosing to prioritize health, relationships (we ARE better together, right?), and personal growth has been a source of empowerment, reminding me daily that my past does not define me - my choices do!

Empowerment and Freedom

This journey has shifted my perspective from feeling like a victim to recognizing my strength and ability to shape my destiny. Sobriety has liberated me from the chains of dependency, allowing me to make choices aligned with my values and aspirations. This newfound freedom has opened doors to new opportunities I couldn't have dreamed of before - marriage to my beautiful wife, celebrating the birth of our sweet little girl, scaling an impact-driven business, and so much more.

Looking Forward to a Bright Future

As I continue to celebrate this milestone every single day, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement for what's to come. Sobriety has opened my eyes to the beauty of life and the joy of living authentically.

To everyone who has supported me, thank you. Your belief in me has been a tremendous source of strength. I'm eager to continue on this path of empowerment and hope, excited for what the future holds!

If you're curious about learning more about positive reframing, I can't recommend the Montana Institute's work around 'Positive Community Norms' enough. Plus, the Summer Institute will be here sooner than we know it!
