Zero Proof, Full Impact: Connection, Culture, and Community
Welcome back, podcast listeners and watchers! In this episode, we're delving into a remarkable story of transformation and innovation led by the SHIFT initiative at UT Austin. This episode serves as a kind of “where are they now” follow-up to a prior discussion, with special guests Kate and Catherine, both integral to the success of SHIFT.
Listen to my conversation with Kate and Catherine:
A Bold Call to Action: The Origins and Mission of SHIFT
SHIFT began as a grant-funded initiative aimed at challenging campus norms and culture surrounding substance use. As Kate, a leading figure in the organization, eloquently described, SHIFT is not an acronym but a bold call to action to create an environment that supports holistic student well-being. The initiative aims to challenge traditional campus culture, particularly regarding alcohol and other substances, by promoting mindful decision-making, positive social connections, and a space where all students, regardless of their choices around substance use, can thrive.
Adapting Through Adversity: SHIFT During the Pandemic
Remarkably, the mission of SHIFT gained new urgency during the pandemic, which underscored the importance of community and well-being. According to Kate, the pandemic put their work at the forefront, spurring innovation and adaptive thinking.
SHIFT Makers: Students Changing the Culture
A cornerstone of SHIFT's mission is the SHIFT Makers program, which invites students to become zero-proof mixologists. This is no ordinary student job; it has profound implications for personal growth, community building, and cultural transformation. SHIFT Makers prepare and serve non-alcoholic drinks at various events, providing students with an inclusive and equitable social experience.
Training and Personal Growth
The journey for each SHIFT Maker begins with comprehensive training that includes both mixology and vital interpersonal skills. Catherine, one of the SHIFT Makers, shared her experience of learning at Sans Bar in downtown Austin. The training sessions, including fun role-playing exercises and community-building activities, equipped her and her peers with the skills to engage meaningfully with event attendees.
Events and Community Engagement
SHIFT Makers serve at a variety of events, including alumni gatherings, student study sessions, and even retirement parties. At these events, the focus is less on the drink itself and more on the interaction and connection created with each guest. This approach has facilitated many meaningful conversations, sometimes even leading to lasting friendships, as Catherine experienced first-hand.
Impact and Reach
Since its inception, SHIFT has significantly expanded its reach across the UT Austin campus and beyond. From initially conducting just a few events, they've grown to host around 60 events annually, with many more requests coming in. Kate recounted several anecdotes highlighting the program's success, including a fraternity event where zero-proof drinks became a surprise hit.
Zero Proof vs. Non-Alcoholic: Understanding the Difference
An essential element of SHIFT's work is educating the campus about the difference between zero-proof and non-alcoholic beverages. Zero-proof means no alcohol content whatsoever, while non-alcoholic drinks might still contain trace amounts. This distinction is pivotal for ensuring inclusivity and catering to all preferences, particularly for individuals in recovery or those under 21.
Personal Stories: The Ripple Effect
SHIFT has had a pronounced personal impact on its members and the broader student community. Catherine shared how being a SHIFT Maker improved her communication skills and made her more aware of alternative, zero-proof options available in daily life. Moreover, the sense of community among SHIFT Makers has provided an invaluable support network.
Final Thoughts: A Community United in Change
As our episode concluded, the gratitude and pride in their work were palpable. Kate highlighted the importance of collecting feedback and continually evolving the program to be more impactful and sustainable. Catherine recounted her experiences with excitement, emphasizing the positive, holistic nature of her role as a SHIFT Maker.
